Michael Lumb's first century for Nottinghamshire built on the earlier good work of their bowlers on day two against Durham at Chester-le-Street.
Number three Lumb, who joined from Hampshire in the winter, hit 15 fours in his 104 not out as the visitors closed on 231-4 in their second innings, a lead of 263.
He added 85 with opener Alex Hales for the second wicket and 99 alongside James Taylor (37) for the fourth.
Durham had earlier collapsed from 55-3 to 129 all out, Notts' Ben Phillips leading the way with 4-33.
Phillips received good support from fellow seamers Andre Adams (3-42) and Andy Carter (3-27), while Durham number four Ben Stokes' 33 was the top score of an innings lasting 43.4 overs in total.
